SALAD FINGERS: One Final Look

By now, you’ve either decided this series of animations is sick and unwatchable or you’ve become hooked and have watched the other episodes without my prompting.  So my work is pretty much finished.

But I do want to wrap things up with another important episode in this series.  It’s been established that while SF appears to  be fully grown, he still has a child’s wild imagination.  His “adventures” are the result of a collision between this imagination and his surreal and psychotic nature.  Everything indicates he lives in a world where everything went terribly wrong somewhere along the way.  A normal (if utterly terrified) child enters his home (“Friends”), and while sampling “floor-sugar,” he discovers what appears to be a once-normal human corpse (“Shore Leave”).

But his world is also populated by nightmare children (“Cage,” “Picnic”) and a deranged armless man (“Nettles”).  One wonders if the “Great War” that is often mentioned is just another child of SF’s fancy or a real event that is somehow connected to the series’s dream logic.  Thankfully, Firth never tries to explain or examine this.

But what happens to a creature like SF when his fancy goes too far even for him?  What happens when his mind turns on itself?  “Present” gives us a peek into that window, but in my opinion, “Cupboard” takes us all the way in the door…and locks it behinds us.  And not even SF is safe inside.
